Spain has arrested 16 people allegedly linked to the al-Qaeda network and Algerian Islamic circles on suspicion of preparing attacks, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar said.
"The dismantled network has connections with terrorists arrested recently in France and Britain who were preparing to carry out attacks, using explosives and chemical materials," Mr Aznar said today.
He said the raids, all of which were in the northern province of Catalonia, included 12 searches that led to the seizure of "explosive, chemical and electronic material" as well as "transmission equipment".
