Police in Spain's Basque country today arrested eight people on suspicion of being members of the outlawed separatist group ETA, Spanish national radio has reported.
The radio report said police had seized over 100 kilogrammes of explosives and a number of guns and other weapons.
"We confirm there is a major operation against ETA in progress. We will give details in the course of the morning," a spokesman for the Basque regional government said.
Anti-ETA demonstrations were planned today at (10.00 a.m. Irish time) across the Basque country following the latest attack, which killed an elderly woman and injured her grandson in an explosion on Monday.
The government has attributed the attack to pro-ETA youth groups. The 16-month-old child lost his eyes in the explosion, caused by a booby-trapped toy car, and is still in intensive care today.
