The Spar chain of convenience stores has described as "unwitting" the illegal sale of beer to two underage teens at its outlet in O'Connell Street, Dublin.

A Dublin District Court judge ordered the closure of the off-licence part of the store for three days at the start of next month as a result of the incident in February last year.

A 16-year-old and a 17-year- old were stopped by gardaí after they left the shop with six cans of beer. They were brought back into the store, where the offence was admitted.

In addition to ordering the temporary closure of the off licence, the judge also imposed a €400 fine on the company that runs the store, Ashglen Property Co Ltd.

A Spar spokesman said the shop assistant concerned was no longer on the staff, but he declined to say whether any disciplinary action was taken.

Ashglen is a subsidiary of another company, Newhill, which in turns owns 20 per cent of the BWG Group, owner of the Spar franchise in Ireland. Newhill is controlled by Dublin businessman John Clohisey.
