A coroner has called on the Government to introduce legislation obliging all young motorists to fix a speed limiter on any cars they are allowed to drive.

Coroner for South Kerry Terence Casey made the call at an inquest in Killarney today into the deaths of four teenagers killed in a single vehicle crash outside the town last August.

David Breen (17) and his 15-year-old brother Kevin from Ballyspillane, Killarney;  Áine Riordan (15) from Castleisland; and Brian Coffey (19) from Fossa died when their car driven by David Breen went out of control and crashed into a tree.

Today's inquest heard that although three of the four had spent the night at a party, alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

It heard technical evidence from a Grda forensic crash investigator who estimated that the car was travelling at between 99 and 111km/h when it went out of control at Carrigeen, on the main Killarney to Mallow road at around 7am on August 25th last.

The sole survivor of the crash, Darragh Jones, said David Breen had been driving "flat out" and that "the car was hopping off the road" just before the crash.

A verdict of accidental death was recorded in the case of Kevin Breen, Áine Riordan and Brian Coffey. A verdict of death by misadventure was recorded in the case of David Breen.
