Colombo - Tamil Tiger rebels yesterday greeted the inauguration of Sri Lanka's new government with co-ordinated attacks that killed at least 26 people and wounded 44, officials said.
Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) separatists fired heavy mortar bombs at the Pahala Toppur army base in the northeastern district of Trincomalee and captured a bunker line. In a simultaneous attack, the Tigers struck the Valachchenai police station in the adjoining Batticaloa district.
