Colombo - Sri Lanka said yesterday that more than 250 Tamil Tiger rebels had been killed in the military's latest offensive in the north-west of the Indian Ocean island.

The Defence Ministry said in a statement that troops had so far recovered 97 rebel bodies of which 38 had been handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross in the town of Mannar. Troops supported by armour, artillery and planes had captured 67 square km in the offensive that was launched on Saturday.
