A man who was taken from his home by three men and stabbed was then taken to a pub for a drink, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court has heard.
James Keogh of Woodview Estate, Lucan, Co Dublin, one of three men accused with the abduction of a Patrick Maxwell, was given a two-year suspended sentence for false imprisonment and demanding money with menaces.
He also admitted having stolen a car.
Mr Hugh Hartnett SC, counsel for the defence, said while the attack on Mr Maxwell was "quite bizarre", there were elements in the circumstances surrounding the incident which tended to "shave down" the seriousness of the offence.
Garda Kevin Stratford told the court Mr Maxwell had been abducted because Keogh wanted compensation for guns handed over to gardai. One of two other attackers had stabbed Mr Maxwell with a knife. Mr Maxwell had then been taken to a pub for a drink.
Judge Michael White noted from reports supplied to the court that Keogh had made excellent progress in a drug rehabilitation programme and the probation services had praised his positive attitude. He said the offences were very serious and warned Keogh to stay out of trouble.
