Ian Stanley three-putted the final green from no more than 20 feet to force a play-off with New Zealand’s Bob Charles but he redeemed himself by holding his nerve to win the Senior British Open at Royal County on the first play-off hole.
Charles found the bunker with his tee-shot on the 18th the second time around. From there he was always on the back foot. Stanley hit the fairway, played a safe iron to leave an eight iron for his third.
He found the green in regulation three while Charles was just outside the Australian in four, 25 feet from the hole. This time Charles' putt rolled past the hole while Stanley knowing he had two for victory left his first putt below the hole and was able to tap in from two feetfor par and the win.
