Veteran actor Sir John Mills last night joined Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and pop star Mick Hucknall at a rally of hundreds of Labour supporters.
The Prime Minister, Mr Blair, looked on as the celebrities endorsed his leadership and wished him well for the general election campaign.
Sir John only recently disclosed that he would be supporting Labour for the first time next month.
But Sir Alex told the rally in Manchester that he had been a Labour supporter all his life.
He told about 600 party members, MPs and other Labour figures from the north-west he believed the government had done a good job in the past few years on the economy, employment, helping the poor and putting more money into schools and hospitals.
He also praised Labour for starting to tackle crime and said he was proud to have been asked to help work with the government to campaign against the "menace" of drugs.
"I know a thing or two about leadership and in Tony Blair we have a leader the country can be proud of," he said.
The rally was being used as a call for the widest possible support for Labour.
Sir John (92) said he had been a Conservative supporter all his life but was now switching to Labour.
He said he was "very impressed" with Mr Blair, whom he had met five times.
"He seems to be just right for the job. I am not terribly impressed with what is going on in the Conservative Party.
"I am not a very political animal but I think he is a very, very good leader. He has a great personality and a good sense of humour."
