Popstar Samantha Mumba and her brother Omero were among the celebrities who attended the launch of Pennies from Heaven, a nation-wide appeal to collect spare Irish and foreign coins prior to the Euro changeover.
Minister of State Ms Liz O'Donnell and actor Mr John Hurt were also at the launch, which was held in the Shelbourne Hotel this afternoon.
Pennies from Heavenis run by 11 Irish charities and is hoping to raise £5 million from this appeal.
Speaking at the launch, Pennies from Heavenboard member Mr Maurice Pratt said he was confident that the campaign will be a massive success.
"From Monday October 22nd, An Post will be delivering over one million special Pennies from Heavenmoneybags to every household in Ireland and we hope all families will play their part in filling up these bags," said Mr Pratt.
"These will then be collected by one of our 15,000 strong army of volunteers or alternatively they can be emptied into one of our 3000 blue bins located at public points all over the country."
The appeal has already enlisted the support of the Taoiseach, members of the boyband Westlife, Eddie Irvine, The Corrs, Ronan Keating, Liam Neeson, Sonia O'Sullivan and Gabriel Byrne. A number of businesses have also agreed to support the appeal.
