Enterprise Ireland gave financial support totaling €75 million to 61 new start-up companies in 2003.
The business development agency said it hoped these businesses would employ 1,900 people within three years.
The claim was made at the Business Start-Up Showcase organised by Enterprise Ireland.
Minister of State for Trade and Commerce, Mr Ahern told delegates at the event that "Ireland needs entrepreneurs with the drive and ambition to grow businesses capable of competing in world markets".
