Cairo - An Egyptian man charged with belonging to the country's largest militant Islamic group blamed the government yesterday for the killing of 58 tourists in Luxor last month.
Mr Mostafa Hassanein, among a group of 65 men on trial at the military court 20 km outside Cairo, said the government's rejection of a truce call from the al-Gama'a al-Islamiya (Islamic Group) had prompted Islamist gunmen to shoot and hack to death the tourists.
