The State paid more than £1.5 million in 1999 in pensions to former presidents, ministers and other office-holders

The State paid more than £1.5 million in 1999 in pensions to former presidents, ministers and other office-holders. Two former presidents, Dr Patrick Hillery and Mrs Mary Robinson, received pensions of £60,486. Dr Hillery also got £17,583 as a former minister.

The details were included in the annual finance accounts published by the Department of Finance yesterday.

The list also includes five former Taoisigh: Dr Garret FitzGerald, who was paid £40,702; Mr Charles Haughey, who received £43,416; the late Mr Jack Lynch, who received £26,793; Mr Albert Reynolds, who received £42,830; and Mr Liam Cosgrave, who received £32,562.

As well as former ministers, payments are made to those who held positions such as parliamentary secretary, minister of state, attorney general, ceann comhairle, leas-ceann comhairle, cathaoirleach and leas-cathaoirleach of the Seanad and comptroller and auditor general.
