TODAY MARKS the State’s first National Self-Injury Awareness Day which is intended to promote a better understanding of self-harm.

While A&E departments deal with about 11,000 cases of self-inflicted injury every year, health professionals believe that the true rate is much higher because many cases never come to the attention of the health services. Therapists and researchers will hold a seminar in Trinity College’s School of Nursing and Midwifery today to launch the designated day and to look at new ways of understanding self-injury.
