More than €18 million will be paid by the State to cover the costs of the Barr inquiry into the fatal shooting of John Carthy in Abbeylara Co Longford six years ago.
It was reported today that Mr Justice Barr has decided to award full costs to all parties that appeared before the tribunal. The report will be published tomorrow.
Carthy, a builder who suffered from manic depression, was shot dead by the Garda Emergency Response Unit as he left his house after a siege during which he had fired up to 30 shots. He was holding a shotgun when he was killed by shots from two ERU unit members.
Mr Justice Barr's inquiry called more than 160 witnesses as he examined a number of issues, including An Garda's handling of the siege.
The report was due to have been published in 2005 and no reason as yet has been given for its delay.
