Over the course of the last week I have been trying to get to grips with the controversy that has surrounded my family and I, in relation to my Oireachtas expenses.
I have struggled to cope with the progression of events. I have made mistakes as a result.
I deeply regret that the statement I made in Seanad Éireann on Wednesday was not sufficient and with hindsight
I would have handled that opportunity differently. I did not furnish enough information and I apologise for that.
I am fortunate to have a West Cork residence, a Clontarf residence and a constituency office in Killester. I travel from all three to fulfil my duties in the Seanad.
There are anomalies in the old expense system and I was endeavouring to address them in order to reflect my personal circumstances.
I was residing in my residence in West Cork when I was appointed to the Seanad. My expenses were initiated to reflect that position. But due to the way this controversy has been presented, I can relate to and acknowledge the level of public annoyance.
The Select Committee on Members’ Interest of Seanad Éireann is now examining the facts. I promise to engage with them in a comprehensive fashion. I understand that I have complied with the regulations and I have engaged honestly with the Houses of the Oireachtas in order for my expenses to reflect my personal circumstances. I would like to assure the public in this regard and I confirm that I have already provided this information to the Select Committee.
I am sorry for the controversy I have generated and how that has impacted on the members of the Oireachtas and politics in general. I am also sorry if my actions have made the last week difficult for my family, friends and supporters.
This matter has deflected from more important national and international matters. Therefore, I am resigning the Fianna Fáil party whip with immediate effect without prejudice, pending the deliberations of the Select Committee.
