The following is the full text of the IASA statement released yesterday:
The IASA has not had an opportunity to study the Murphy Report in detail but are shocked and saddened by what we have read. We welcome the Report and thank Dr Murphy for the excellent work he has done. It is an extremely difficult time for all involved, most especially for the victims and their families. To them we offer our deepest sympathies.
We can understand their anger and frustration but assure all those involved in the sport that we will do whatever is required to ensure that the appalling abuse that occurred in the past can never occur again.
We are studying the recommendations and will be putting a package of measures, encompassing the Inquiry Report's Recommendations, to our Executive Committee this weekend. It is our intention to then present our proposals to Dr Jim McDaid, Minister of Tourism, Sport and Recreation, for his approval. Following that we will be calling a series of Special General Meetings to implement the proposals.
It is our determined intention to do all that is required to ensure that the Association puts in place the safest possible situations in all our clubs, Branches and the Association itself.
In that regard we are extremely anxious to find out who the two other coaches mentioned in the Report are. We need to be sure that they are not in any way associated with any of our clubs and we are trying to ascertain the details concerning these two individuals from the relevant authorities.
