Bishkek - Russia, China and three central Asian states, in their two-day summit, have undertaken to work together to keep their territories safe from turmoil and backed the creation of a "multi-polar world" to bolster stability.

The declaration highlights the "importance of fighting international terrorism, the illegal drug trade, arms trafficking, illegal migration and other forms of trans-border crime, separatism and religious extremism," said the Chinese President, Mr Jiang Zemin, at the signing ceremony yesterday.

The reference to a "multi-polar world" is diplomatic code among Russian and Asian leaders for opposing US influence in the world, which they see as running counter to their interests as regional powers.
