Lufthansa said it has cancelled 26 flights within Germany and Europe today due to heavy storms and did not rule out further disruptions.
More cancellations may follow later in the day, although long-haul flights are not expected to be affected, the airline said.
Winds of up to 120 kilometres (75 miles) per hour were ripping through western and central Germany, moving eastwards. Meteorologists said the storm was shaping up to be the worst to hit the country in four or five years.
