The trial begins in Bruges, Belgium, today of three men charged in connection with the deaths of eight stowaways in Wexford in December 2001.
Thirteen people were discovered in a container of furniture from Italy in Wexford Business Park.
Eight of them suffocated during the 53-hour journey from Zeebrugge in Belgium to Belview Port, near Waterford and five others were seriously injured. It is understood they were in the container for between four and eight days.
Three men, one woman, three young males aged four, nine, and 17 and a 10-year-old girl died. Six of the dead were Turkish nationals.
The stowaways were assisted by criminals who severed the metal security seal in the container and then resealed it with silicone gel once the passengers were on board.
Three men including the lorry driver, an assistant and an "organiser" face a number of charges including human trafficking.
Detectives from Wexford division will attend the trial and are expected to give evidence in connection with documents found in the container.
The asylum seekers believed they were heading for Britain and the container originated in Milan, Italy.
