A Tory MP has lashed out at a big screen movie of Margaret Thatcher’s life, calling it “disrespectful”.
Rob Wilson said he was "disturbed" by the way The Iron Lady, which stars Meryl Streep, portrayed the former prime minister.
The Reading East MP, an aide to Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, called for a Commons debate on “respect, good manners and good taste”.
He said: "This week I attended the screening of The Iron Lady and was disturbed by the way it portrayed its subject.
“Can we therefore have a debate on respect, good manners and good taste as I found the film, although brilliantly acted, disrespectful to a member of this Parliament.”
Commons leader Sir George Young, who served as a minister in the Thatcher administration, said he had not seen the film but had heard “conflicting views” from MPs who had.
“Some found it a good film, others like you obviously found bits of it distasteful.
“I welcome a debate on it, but I think that ministers should be cautious about expressing views which might be seen to be censorship on the sort of films which are produced by independent producers.”
The film charts Baroness Thatcher’s political career which saw her become the first female British prime minister.
But it also depicts her ailing health in old age in a way which has upset some commentators.
