A Garda spokesman said there were no reported incidences of Junior Cert students causing trouble tonight as they celebrated their results.

Additional officers are on duty this evening, targetting areas where underage people were known to attempt to access alcohol, such as city centres, certain off-licence and playing fields where young people may go to drink alcohol.

Gardaí in Dublin are also running a special operation to target areas where they think drink may be sold to underage persons.

Earlier today Mr Richard Dunne, chairman of the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland (DIGI) warned that the night of the Junior Certificate results in a sharp rise in the number of young people trying to gain admission to pubs and nightclubs.

He asked adults to refuse to buy alcohol for young people.

The Vintners' Federation of Ireland (VFI) urged its 6,000 rural publicans to only serve people with legal identification, such as a passport, drivers' licence or valid National Age Card.

Both the VFI and the DIGI called for the introduction of a mandatory national identification card.
