A student has been killed following a shooting in the car park of a high school in Indiana.

He is believed to have been killed by a student who was expelled from the (Lew) Wallace High School in Gary last year. It happened this morning before school started.

The Post-Tribunenewspaper reported the student who was shot was in a crowd. It was not known whether he was the intended target. There were no other injuries reported.

"The student who was shot was a student enrolled at (Lew) Wallace High School," Gary School Superintendent Ms Mary Guinn told Chicago television station WBBM-TV. "We have not had any problems of discipline with the student at all. He was enrolled in course work that certainly could lead to a promising future for him."

Ms Guinn said counsellors had been called in to help students come to terms with what had happened.

"It's something that just happened this morning, OK. It wasn't a random shooting," Police Chief John Roby told MSNBC. He said it apparently was planned.

"We have a 17-year-old suspect in custody and we're in the process of putting the case together now," Mr Roby said. He said there hadn't been any trouble at the school before.
