A NUMBER of young people who attended a Leaving Cert results party at a Dublin nightclub have complained of overcrowding and severe difficulties exiting.
About 800 students attended the Dandelion nightclub on St Stephen’s Green on Wednesday night.
A number complained of crushing and panic attacks brought on by difficulties exiting, due to high volumes of people at the doors.
The Dandelion, on the site of the old Dandelion market, is a downstairs venue accessed by a stairwell from the street.
A small smoking area is sited on the footpath at the entrance.
One young woman named Alice, who contacted RTÉ Radio One’s Liveline programme yesterday, said that when she tried to leave there “was a huge crush at the door”.
She said people were having to push their way to the front and “as a girl” she found it difficult.
Another customer, named Ruth, also described a “crush” at the exit.
Operations director of the Dandelion, David Parnell, told the programme staff were unaware of any problem with crowds at the main door on the night.
He was on the premises at the time, he added. “At no stage at all did we exceed capacity,” he said and continued that he was “a bit mystified” at the claims of overcrowding at the exits.
A spokeswoman for Dublin Fire Brigade confirmed an ambulance and a fire officer did respond to a call to visit the venue.
She said she was not aware of any issue arising from his inspection.
