More than one in five Leaving Cert students who appealed their results have secured an upgrade, according to figures published today.
In all, 11,567 results were the subject of an appeal. Some 23 per cent secured an upgrade.
More than 6,000 students decided to appeal their result, mostly in one subject or two. Remarkably, six students had their results downgraded after the appeal.
The most popular subject for an appeal was higher-level English, where more than 6,000 wanted a recheck on their result. About one in four secured an upgrade.
Other successful rechecks at higher level include:
r Biology: 1,216 appeals (326 upgrades)
r Geography: 1076 (318)
r Irish: 731 (208)
r Business: 676 (147)
r French: 648 (128)
r Maths: 592 (128)
At ordinary level, 83 of the 459 students who sought a recheck in maths gained an upgrade.
Details of individual appeals will be made available to candidates today.
Many students are waiting for the results on the recheck to secure the extra CAO points they need for their preferred third-level course.
