While much of Britpop has become dull and workmanlike, Suede have kept their shine, thanks to their finely-tuned trash aesthetic and their sharply-honed pop dynamic. Add in an almost fanatical loyalty to their fans, and you have a band which understands the importance of connecting with its core audience and reaching the parts other bands can't touch. Their current album, Head Music, features the pure pop magic of She's In Fashion, plus the crackling Electricity and the dreamy Everything Will Flow. With an emphasis on style and sexuality, Suede could be accused of putting image before content, and certainly the new album appears to be all surface, no feeling. But there's no denying the charge of sheer pop energy which keeps Suede sparkling while others have lost their sheen.
See them live at The Olympia Theatre on Thursday and Friday night.
