It's hip to be square
Square watermelons will be available in Tesco's British supermarkets later this year, writes Hélène Hofman. Tesco says sales of conventional melons are held back because their shape makes them difficult to cut and store.
The new melons will be imported from Brazil where they are grown in wooden boxes. Square melons are already big in Japan where they sell for about 10,000 yen (€ 68) each. However, the British price will be less than £5 (€7.32).
Festival frenzy
The Spraoi in Waterford starts this evening. and runs over the weekend. A highlight will be the Drummers of Burundi in their Irish debut. Graiguenamanagh, Co Kilkenny says its regatta on Sunday and Monday is the oldest inland regatta in Ireland. The Greystones Festival in Co Wicklow also takes place this weekend, as does the Ballyshannon Folk Festival in Co Donegal.
