Sun Microsystems has laid off 24 people involved in hardware development at its Strategic Software Development centre in Dublin.
Staff at the Scalable Systems Division were told yesterday that the unit was relocating to America, along with 180 staff employed in the same division in Britain.
A spokesman for the company said the move was part of a drive by the company to reduce its global workforce by 3,300, announced in April.
The company announced its fourth straight quarter of losses in the same month. Losses for the qaurter to April 2004 were $760 million.

He added that 160 staff remain with the company engaged in specialised software development and that Sun Microsystems' commitment to Ireland, remained very stable.
