Ireland's most famous twins were christened yesterday in a quiet ceremony in north Dublin.

Rocco and Jay Byrne, grandsons of Taoiseach Bertie Ahern posed briefly in matching baptismal gowns for the media with their parents Georgina and Nicky Byrne outside St Sylvester's Church in Malahide, Co Dublin.

In a private ceremony at St Sylvester's Catholic church on the town's main street the three-month-old boys were christened by the same priest who presided at the Byrne wedding in Gallardon, south of Paris in August 2003.

The rain held off and the sun shone for the ceremony for the two boys who were born prematurely in April at Holles Street hospital.

A happy grandfather Bertie Ahern was beaming for the cameras on the occasion. He told RTÉ that he was well used to the names now. In fact "they're well known everywhere, because everywhere you go in the country people ask how's Rocco and Jay".

The children's father, Westlife star Nicky Byrne described the day as "very, very special" and said "it feels amazing".

The entire Ahern family was there including the twins' grandmother Miriam Ahern and their aunt Cecilia Ahern who is godmother to Rocco, along with the other members of Westlife.
