Support group welcomes decision

The Supreme Court's decision was welcomed by support group Patient Focus last night.

The Supreme Court's decision was welcomed by support group Patient Focus last night.

"We're really pleased with the decision, everybody is totally relieved. We're very happy for Alison and Fergus," said Ms Sheila O'Connor of the association.

"They've taken on a huge establishment, it's not easy to take on a doctor and win," she said.

"We're pleased with the decision that the statute of limitations didn't preclude Alison taking action against Dr Neary," she said.

"If healthy young women can be damaged what can happen to sick people?" she asked.

Patient Focus is now calling on the Minister for Health, Mr Martin, to "do what he knows will have to be done in the end".

"We need a tribunal of inquiry and compensation, lessons have to be learnt here," said Ms O'Connor.

Responding to the call for a tribunal to be established, a spokeswoman from the Department of Health said they hoped to have the Medical Council report on Dr Neary "by the end of the year".

"The Minister has to await the outcome of the [Medical Council's] report on Dr Neary," she told The Irish Times.
