Washington - A small crowd gathered outside the Foundry United Methodist Church in Washington yesterday in anticipation of the arrival of the President and Mrs Clinton for the regular Sunday morning church service.

The President normally attends the service every week he is in the capital. One man held a placard saying: "We forgive you, Bill".

A student, Mr Steve Slatten (30), of Georgetown University, said: "I think this has been a total partisan witch-hunt, although I don't condone what he did. I don't like the idea of my taxpayer's dollars going to fund this four-year investigation. I just had to show the President still had some support."

As people drifted away when it became clear that Mr Clinton would not be attending yesterday's service, views were mixed over his failure to turn up. A maintenance man, Mr Carl Rose, said: "He isn't running scared. He can handle this pressure."
