One third of Irish workers claim their relationship with their boss is almost unbearable, it was revealed today.

The nationwide survey found only 15 per cent of employees had an excellent relationship with their manager, while 21 per cent said their relationship was pretty good, while one third said they were less than satisfied.

The survey of management styles by recruiters irishjobs.ie, revealed the biggest hate of workers was a lack of support and distrust between management and staff.

A boss who was ignorant, lacked manners and people skills also topped the poll of dislikes.

However, a good boss lets employees get on with the job trusting them to work on their own initiative but is available for support and guidance if required.

The survey of 350 workers also showed they wanted a boss who was approachable, a good listener and treated them with respect. Of workers who claimed their relationship with their boss was very bad, 15 per cent worked in secretarial jobs, 15 per cent in IT and 12 per cent in production.

Mr Jack Feeney, management consultant, said employee satisfaction was the key to a smooth working environment.

"Management style can uncap great pockets of unleashed potential within any organisation or negatively it can drive people to the extreme situation where they resign and walk out," he said. "Poor or incompetent management will nearly always impact negatively on the organisation in terms of high staff turnover, low morale, reduced productivity and lost opportunity."
