Several controlled explosions were carried out last night on a suspect vehicle abandoned outside Thiepval base in Lisburn, Co Antrim, British army headquarters in Northern Ireland. An RUC spokesman said they were not aware of any warnings that a device had been left in the vehicle. Nearby houses were evacuated.
Army bomb experts then moved in, and a security operation was still continuing late last night. The RUC spokesman said it was too early to ascertain whether there was a device in the suspect vehicle.
On October 7th, 1996, Warren Officer James Brandwell died of injuries he received in two IRA bombs at Thiepval barracks during a breakdown in the ceasefire.
