The Midland Health Board confirmed last night its staff was treating a suspected case of bacterial meningitis in a three-month-old child in Portlaoise Hospital who was admitted for treatment on Saturday.
Tests are still being carried out to determine if the death of a 20-year-old student on Friday, was caused by meningitis. The young man was a student at Carlow Regional College.
The Midland Health Board spokeswoman said there was no social connection between the two victims and the baby is in a stable condition at the hospital.
