Spanish police in Torremolinos have arrested an Irishman wanted in connection with a mortar attack on a British military base in Germany in 1989.
Leonard Hardy (44) from north Belfast is to face extradition proceedings to Germany over his suspected involvement in an IRA strike on a base in Osnabruck.
Police seized Hardy, who served five years in Porlaoise prision for possession of explosions in the early 1990s, at a hotel on the Costa del Sol on Thursday. He is believed to have been in Spain for several months.
According to reports, Hardy has been transferred to Madrid where he is to appear before the Audiencia Nacional, Spain's high court.
A spokesperson from the Department of Foreign Affairs said that they were aware of the arrest and would be making enquiries.
