A suspected outbreak of the winter vomiting virus involving 32 people is disrupting procedures at Waterford Regional hospital.

A total of 21 patients and 11 nursing staff have shown symptoms of the Small Round Structural Virus (SRSV). Tests have been done on them and are being processed.

The hospital is closed to all elective admissions including day surgery. However, all emergencies will be admitted.

Outpatients will be seen today, Monday and Tuesday, but that procedure will be reviewed on Monday.

Visitors are being asked not to go to the hospital unless it is absolutely necessary. Children will only be allowed to visit the hospital in exceptional circumstances. The health board is also requesting doctors in the area to only refer urgent cases to the hospital.
