The three IRA suspects accused of providing weapons training to Colombian Marxist rebels have been moved to the capital's Modelo jail, home to guerrillas, paramilitaries and drug-traffickers, a spokesman for the state prisons agency INPEC said last night.

Mr Martin McCauley, Mr James Monaghan and Mr Niall Connolly, were arrested on August 11th at Bogota's international airport and accused on Tuesday of assisting illegal activities and using false documents. They are being held without bail.

A lawyer for the men expressed opposition to them being moved to Modelo from the military post where they were being held, saying that "if they are moved to that place, they are condemned to death."

The attorney, who asked not to be identified, said a number of inmates had been the victims of recent clashes at the jail between right-wing paramilitaries and leftist guerrillas.
