The Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) is to build a €1.2 million centre in Galway thanks to a bequest from the late owner of O'Connell's pub on Eyre Square.
Maureen O'Connell bequeathed the proceeds from the sale of her pub to support the work of SVP in the area.
The resource centre will be on Mill Street close to the city centre in a three-storey, 19th-century listed building that the organisation has owned since the early 1960s. The bequest allows work to begin on the refurbishment of the building.
Initially, the resource centre will cater for up to 35 elderly people daily and provide leisure, educational and health facilities. Work on the site begins immediately and should be finished by mid-November.
