A senior official from the ruling Taliban has said the movement had downed an unidentified aircraft in southern Afghanistan during US-led attacks.
Deputy Defence Minister Mullah Noor Ali also told Qatar's al-Jazeera television the strikes had caused minimal damage to unimportant targets.
"We downed a plane in the province of Farah, he said but gave no further details. "We are ready for all their air and land strikes and our downing of the plane shows that we are ready with all our weapons and resources".
There was no immediate independent confirmation.
US Defense Secretary Mr Donald Rumsfeld said the United States had no indication that any of its aircraft had been damaged or shot down in the first wave of attacks.
"The targeted places were not important and there wasn't much damage," Ali said. "These attacks made us believe more in our stances . . . all Mujahideen are in their trenches and are not hurt and there is no need to worry.
"This is a terrorist attack carried out by the United States. They are destroying the homes of the unarmed Afghan people. They are the true terrorists and this is quite obvious," he said.
