Talks aimed at averting a strike by Bank of Ireland IT staff are underway at the Labour Relations Commission.

The LRC intervened in the row over outsourcing of Bank of Ireland's IT activities to Hewlett Packard by inviting Bank of Ireland and the Irish Bank Officials' Association (IBOA) to talks.

Both sides appeared to be unwilling to compromise on the key sticking point - the job security of staff who transfer to Hewlett-Packard under a seven-year contract.

Staff at ITSIS which is based in Cabinteely, Dublin, and provides IT support for many of the bank's key services such as ATMs and internet banking voted for a 24-hour strike from midnight on Thursday.

Bank of Ireland insists the strike will not have an impact on its branches or its customers, although the IBOA has signalled that it could cause substantial disruption.
