Irish soccer officials had talks today with the game's governing body FIFA over the possible rescheduling of Ireland's World Cup playoff against an Asian team due to the U.S. military action against Afghanistan.

Ireland's potential opponents include Iran and Uzbekistan, both of whom share a border with Afghanistan, and there is media speculation in Ireland that the two-legged tie could be replaced by a one-off game at a neutral venue.

"Both the FAI and FIFA recognise that the military action that commenced yesterday has increased the difficulty," said a statement from the Football Association of Ireland (FAI).

"The FAI is looking for a quick decision by FIFA, in the best interests of all parties involved."
