The Irish Nurses' Organisation (INO) will meet North Eastern Health Board officials today to discuss the planned removal of services at Louth County Hospital.
The INO were angered when they learned through the media last week about the plan to move after-hours surgical cover to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.
The board has been asked to provide the INO with a risk-assessment and risk-management plan at the Dundalk hospital after the organisation claimed post-operative patients could be endangered by the absence of consultant cover after 5 p.m.
The INO says the plan is "dangerous, unprecedented and not in the interest of quality patient care".
But the health board says the plan will enhance patient services, cut waiting lists and increase the number of elective surgeries carried out at the hospital.
Consultants have also condemned the plan, which is due to be introduced from July 1st.
