Talks on school supervision and substitution between Department of Education officials and teacher unions adjourned later last night without agreement.
Mr Tom Pomphrett, the independent talks mediator has asked the department and the Teachers Union of Ireland and Irish National Teachers Organisation to consider their positions and reconvene next Tuesday.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Education said the intention was that both sides would remain in talks next Tuesday until an agreement was reached.
