The foundation stone of the School of Design for Industry at the National College of Art and Design was laid yesterday by the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern.

The school is due to open in mid-1998 and will complete the college's move from its Leinster Lane/Kildare Street premises to the former Powers Distillery site in Thomas Street.

The vacated building on the Leinster Lane site, which was occupied by the college for the last 182 years, will be used by the Houses of the Oireachtas for the major extension commencing in 1998.
