The torture and humiliation of Iraqi prisoners by US troops must be raised by the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, with President Bush when he visits Ireland next month, according to Centre for the Care of Survivors of Torture.

Mr Mike Walker, spokesman for the centre - which treated victims of torture under Saddam Hussein's regime - said "these issues should be raised with the president". The director, Father Michael Begley, called on "all nations to speak out against torture in all its forms and to make ending torture an essential part of their diplomacy".

Mr Fazyl Gaedi (53), who was tortured during the Saddam era, said the images of US troops would make "Osama bin Laden the happiest man in the world".
