Campaigners seeking to re-route the proposed M3 motorway away from the Hill Of Tara travel to London today to seek funding for their protest.

The Tara valley was named one of the world's 100 most endangered sites by the New York-based World Monument Fund yesterday.

Siobhan Rice and Vincent Salafia of Tarawatch are meeting officials from the World Monuments Fund in London today for the formal unveiling of the list of 100 sites.

They are hoping to secure additional funding for an independent archaeological report on the proposed motorway.

An application to the WMF to include Tara on its "watch list" was made earlier this year by Tarawatch, one of the groups campaigning against plans to route the M3 through the Gabhra Valley, between the ancient seat of Ireland's high kings and the Hill of Skryne.

Opponents have claimed the road, in particular a 34-acre floodlit intersection north of the hill, will ruin the landscape and destroy many archaeological sites.

Compiled by an international panel of experts, the "watch list" is described as "a global call to action on behalf of sites in need of immediate intervention, bringing them to international attention and helping to raise funds for their rescue".

Since 1965, the WMF has given €35 million in grants to 214 sites.
