The increase in the number of taxi plates in Dublin to over 6,300 has been welcomed by the Fianna Fail general election candidate in the Dublin mid-west constituency, Mr Des Kelly.

When the deregulation of the taxi service took place in November last year, there were 2,722 licences in the Dublin Corporation area.

"This increase of over 3,500 new taxi licences has certainly helped to improve the frequency of taxi services for people living in Dublin city and county areas," he said.

Mr Kelly said taxi-drivers should be exempt from paying vehicle registration tax if a condition was attached to their licences that all taxis must be of a particular standard and be less than four years old.
