A taxi owners' association today vowed to work as normal if the planned stoppage by three of the main unions goes ahead on Monday.

Drivers have organised a one-day stoppage from 5am on Monday to 5am on Tuesday over claims the Taxi Regulator has failed to recognise their concerns about a new fares plan and the abolition of certain charges.

But the Taxi Company Owners' Association (TCOA), which represents around 10 of Dublin's well-known firms, said that they will operate as normally as possible during the stoppage.

The three main drivers' unions - the Taxi Drivers' Federation, the National Taxi Drivers' Union (NTDU) and Siptu - have organised the action. They represent around 14,000 of the 17,000 taxi drivers nationwide.

The TCOA said managers have found only minimum support for the action among drivers renting radios from them.

Derek Dalrymple, secretary of the association and co-owner of Express taxi company, said: "Contrary to the public perception, most drivers have expressed their desire to work on as usual.

"The TCOA believe that it is a mistake to try to organise a national stoppage when the main issue - the loss of the €1.50 Dublin airport pick-up charge - is just a local issue."

The unions have been calling for Taxi Regulator Ger Deering to reconsider changes due to take place from September under the Driving Forward Action Planwhen a new national taxi fare is put in place.

They are objecting to the cutting of the €1.50 hiring charge for picking up passengers at Dublin airport and the removal of luggage charges.

Mr Dalrymple said: "The Taxi Regulator has said he cannot justify this charge to the public and it has no place in a national taxi fare. The public can hardly be expected to sympathise with drivers taking a stance against this."

"We do understand that there are genuine concerns among drivers, relating to other areas of the Driving Forward Driving Forward, Action Plan, but stoppages only deny a self-employed person the ability to earn," said Mr Dalrymple, a member of the taxi regulator's board, said.
