Trinity College students have voted in favour of banning Coca Cola products from Student Union shops on the campus.

A total of 3,400 votes were cast last night with 1,800 supporting the ban and 1,600 against.

The boycott is in support of the Coca Cola workers' official trade union in Colombia which has called for an international ban on all the company's products in protest at alleged human rights abuses by Coca Cola.

Coca Cola has dismissed the allegations as "completely false".

The ban takes immediate effect, according to Mr Rory Hearne, who heads the Trinity Boycott Coke Campaign.

SIPTU campaigned recently against a similar ban undertaken by University College Dublin students saying such a ban would threaten jobs at Irish bottling banks.
