TDs to host debate on housing estates

The upkeep of housing estates will be discussed at a public meeting called by TDs today.

Residents' groups are angry that unregulated management firms are charging householders for services that should be provided by local authorities.

Independent North Kildare TD Catherine Murphy and Dublin West TD Joe Higgins of the Socialist Party will attend the meeting at the Red Cow Inn in Dublin.

The failure of developers to finish housing estates to design standards is also a concern.

"It is essential that the pressure is kept on local authorities, the Government and developers to ensure that we see an end to these issues," Ms Murphy said.

"People power is of huge importance on an issue such as this and public meetings are a vital way of mobilising that power."

Ms Murphy said the people of Co Kildare paid out €35 million in motor tax last year but received only €27 million of that to fund essential services like estate maintenance and planning enforcement.
